One of the biggest misconceptions about moving abroad is that it requires a massive bank account or early retirement savings. But in reality, there are several countries where you can live comfortably, and in some cases luxuriously, for less than $2,000 per month.

As someone who chose the Dominican Republic as my home base, I can tell you firsthand that Dominican Republic offers the perfect blend of affordability, beauty, and community. But I also recognize that island living isn’t for everyone. Some people are looking for mountains, colonial cities, or even European charm on a budget, here are five countries where you can stretch your dollars and live well. Keep in mind as you scroll down and read the are average in some places it can be much less or slight higher depending on the city and the individual’s lifestyle.

We’re going to start with my personal favorite. The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean gem with white sandy beaches, lush mountains, vibrant cities, and warm people. You can live in Santo Domingo, Santiago, or even near the beach in places like Las Terrenas or Punta Cana and still keep your budget under $2,000/month.

While I chose the Dominican Republic as my home because it checked all my boxes; culture, proximity to the U.S., family values, and climate. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. That’s why it’s so empowering to know that the dream of living abroad on a modest budget is alive and well in multiple corners of the world.
