How to Choose What City to Live in the Dominican Republic

Find Your Perfect Fit in Paradise

I get asked all the time what city should I move to in Dominican Republic. The problem with this question is 1) Dominican Republic is a big island and offer various lifestyles depending on what you are looking for. 2) I don’t know you, so I do know what fits your personality. And one of the most exciting things about considering a move to the Dominican Republic is the variety of lifestyles available across the island. Whether you need the buzz of the big city, the charm of a beach town, the peace of the mountains, or the richness of rural life, the DR truly has something for everyone.

But with so many choices, how do you decide where to live? It all comes down to your lifestyle, your goals, and the energy you want to wake up to every day.

Big City Living

If you’re anything like me and you thrive on convenience, fast-paced living, business opportunities, and a blend of cultures, then Santo Domingo and Santiago are top choices.

These cities offer:

  • Shopping malls, fine dining, and nightlife

  • Hospitals, universities, and international schools

  • Networking and career opportunities

Best for: Entrepreneurs, professionals, students, and anyone who enjoys an urban lifestyle. Where I am in my life, the lifestyle of a big city is for me.

Small Town Beach Living

When you think of living on an island what comes to mind for many people is being a 5 minute walk from the beach. They dream of those daily beachside mornings and barefoot walks on the sand, then Punta Cana, Bayahibe, Puerto Plata, Las Terrenas, Sosúa, and Cabarete might be for you.

These towns offer:

  • A slower pace of life

  • Stunning beaches and big expat communities

  • Opportunities in tourism, hospitality, and remote work

Best for: Retirees, digital nomads, wellness seekers, and ocean lovers.

Eco-Living in the Mountains

If nature calls your name and you enjoy cooler temperatures and green landscapes, check out Constanza, Jarabacoa, La Vega, and parts of Samaná.

You’ll enjoy:

  • Fresh air, rivers, waterfalls, and hiking trails

  • Peaceful surroundings perfect for reflection and wellness

  • Opportunities for sustainable living and farming

Best for: Nature lovers, adventurers, environmentalists, and those focused on wellness. I personally, enjoy this particular lifestyle over the beach because of the tranquility.

Campo or Rural Living

For a more traditional, local Dominican experience, rural areas like Nagua, Cabrera, Mao, Moca, and Monte Plata provide an authentic way of life.

Expect:

  • Tight-knit communities

  • A lower cost of living

  • Simpler living surrounded by nature and culture

Best for: People who want to live off the land, immerse themselves in local culture, or enjoy a slower, simpler lifestyle. This particular lifestyle would be my last choice. For someone who enjoys convenience, nightlife at arms reach, and upscale restaurants this wouldn’t fit my personality. However, I enjoy weekends and holidays in the campo. It’s always good to have a slow down from the fast pace of a big city.

🏡 Mid-Size City Living

Want a little of everything without the rush of a big city? Consider places like San Pedro de Macorís, San Francisco de Macorís, La Romana, Higüey, and San Cristóbal.

These cities offer:

  • Access to amenities without major traffic or crowds

  • Lower cost of living

  • A good mix of Dominican culture and convenience

Best for: Families, remote workers, and anyone seeking a lifestyle balance. Not on the level of a Santo Domingo or Santiago however these cities can give you that big city vibe where you don’t feel like you’re in a small town.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing

To help narrow it down, ask yourself:

  • Do I want city energy or a peaceful escape?

  • Is being near the beach, mountains, or countryside important?

  • How close do I need to be to hospitals, schools, or nightlife?

  • Am I moving solo, with a partner, or with children?

  • Do I prefer local immersion or being around other expats?

Some areas, like Las Terrenas or La Vega, even offer a blend of different lifestyles, which could make them ideal if you’re looking for variety.

Live Intentionally, Live Freely

Choosing the right place to live in the Dominican Republic is deeply personal. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and that’s what makes the journey so exciting. No matter what you’re looking for, there’s a perfect corner of the DR waiting for you.

Live intentionally, live freely, and most of all, live your best life.

Until then,
